Of course many people have gotten Into accidents because of It but I always thought that, that was because they werent careful enough. I thought that all you had to do was focus on what your doing and make sure that you dont drive all over the place. When I started going to parties in high school and older kids had their licenses I would Jump in their car and catch a ride home once the party was over. Not caring whether they were drinking or not as long as they werent trashed.I had a lot of older friends that drove and I would always get a ride home with them not thinking any thing of It. I didnt care that the kid who was driving me home was Just playing at a beer pong table for hours. I never drove drunk but I knew many friends that did. It didnt affect me until this one night that I will never forget. One of my friends threw a party on a high school Saturday so everyone was there.It was a huge party because his parents left for the weekend and everyone was invited. We had the music blasting all night long and we had all the drinking games you could think of going on in different sections of the house. We had beer pong going on outside, flip cup in the living room, ring of fire downstairs. It was a huge house too so there were over one hundred people at this party which is a lot for a house party In my town. That night I caught a ride with a friend of mine, Scott. Everyone was having a fun time; drinking. Listening to music and chatting.Eventually, It was time for the party to end and at about two in the morning people started leaving. I found my friend that I had gone to the party with and he said to me we are all going to go to Montauk to see the sunrise, are you down? by all he meant him and four other kids; Just enough to pack into his Ionians truck. I said sure, Im down for that! We thought nothing of It and left the party to go to Montauk. Which was about an hour drive. We all packed Into the truck and thought of different ways we could get the time to go by faster. T of all the Ideas we thought about what worked best was to tell stupid stories of the past or stories about what happened at the party we were just at. On the way to Montauk, there was a kid in the truck that didnt drink that night so we had him driving the truck. The only problem with that was that he was underage and didnt have a license yet. About halfway through our Journey we had gotten pulled over for speeding. My friend, George, who was driving got a ticket for driving underage. We were all really nervous because we thought that everyone that was run in the car was going to get busted.When you do something that you know is wrong and you get really anxious and nervous when you think you about to get caught is what we were all thinking when the cop came to the drivers side window. Luckily the cop didnt realize that the rest of us in the truck werent sober enough to drive, so he Just left. The night was already off too bad start. So now my friend Scott who I was drinking with at the party decides to get behind the wheel since It Is his After what seemed to be an eternity, we finally made it to the beach and we got to e the sunrise.We sat shocked and awed on the life guard stand that we had actually made it all the way to Montauk and didnt turn around halfway through. It had to have been one of the stupidest things that we have ever done. Although it seemed so much fun at the time since we didnt want to end the night on a boring note. By now, its about six in the morning and the alcohol is starting to wear off. We are all getting pretty tired and decide that its time for us to head home. Scott was too tired to drive so Alex decides to drive home. We got onto the Long Island Expressway and started our trip back home.Everyone was tired from drinking and then staying up all night long. The kids who werent driving tried to stay up as long as possible to keep Alex company, but eventually we all Just passed out. We wake up to the truck smashing through a telephone pole and slamming into the side bank of train tracks. Alex fell asleep at the wheel driving about 70 miles and hour and swerved off the road. I saw my life flash before my eyes as we were going through that telephone pole. When the truck went into the side bank of the train racks I thought the car was going to starting flipping.Luckily no one was seriously hurt besides a couples bumps and bruises. Within minutes five cop cars and two ambulances showed up at the scene. The cops told us that if we didnt hit that pole first and went straight into the train tracks we would have all died that night. Thats when I knew that I would never, be drinking and driving again or let anyone else that I knew drink and drive. We almost made it out of the accident clean and clear with out getting in trouble until I hear the cop say l found marijuana in the back seat.Alex was never tested for being under the influence but he was charged with possession. Luckily for him he was only seventeen so he was charged as a minor and it wasnt as big as a punishment as it would have been for the other drivers in the truck. Although he did lose his license until he was twenty one. That wasnt as bad as what he had to go through with his parents. He was basically grounded until he went to college and not allowed to do anything. That was the scariest moment of my life. From this I learned that I would never rink and drive again or let any of my friends drink and drive.One night I went too party with a couple of friends and I almost got into a fist fight with my best friend because he tried to drive home while intoxicated. He insisted that he was k to drive and that he wasnt going to let anyone drive him home. Dave its alright Im able to drive home No, Bill Im not letting you get in this car and drive home. Dont be ridiculous Dave Im fine! Give me your keys and let me drive you home NOW! I started getting angry because he wouldnt give up. NO! I had to rip him out of his car and steal his keys; he wanted to fight to get them back since he was drunk and didnt know what he was doing. Eventually a group of friends and I got him to calm down and sit in the back seat while I drove his car home. I wasnt going to let another friend of mine go through what I did. Unlike me he may have killed him self and I would never forgive myself if I let him get into that Driving under the influence would have never been a problem with me until that night when I had to experience what could happen when someone gets behind the wheel drunk myself.

This means that the answers to questions about details in the passage should align with your ideas of what makes sense for the topic. Here's an example of a question that asks about an adapted excerpt from Elizabeth Cady Stanton's address to a Women's Suffrage Convention in 1869: If you're trying to guess on this question, you can eliminate some answers even if you only know the bare minimum about the content of the passage and US history as a whole. Choice A doesn't really make sense because the problem that Stanton is fighting against is long-term control of society by men. She probably wouldn't argue that "the control of society by men" was a recent development at all. Choice B also seems incorrect for larger reasons. It's unlikely that anyone would claim that the spread of war and injustice was a recent historical development at that time in history. Choice C doesn't make sense because women, not men, had traditionally dominated domestic life. This was especially true at the time that Stanton was speaking. Choice D is the answer that seems most plausible if we look at the question logically. Only recently had women begun to be appreciated as human beings on an equal intellectual footing with men (although still to a limited degree obviously, since we didn't get the right to vote until 1920...sigh). This strategy only works for some questions, but it shows how you can sometimes guess without reading the passage and still come up with a likely answer. Keep your wits about you. If something doesn't make logical sense to you, you should listen to that feeling. #2: Use ââ¬Å"Find the Evidenceâ⬠Questions An interesting development forthe Reading section on the new SATis the introduction of ââ¬Å"find the evidenceâ⬠questions.These questions will ask you to choose a quote from the passage that best supports your answer to the previous reading question.Although this could be dangerous because getting one wrong might also mean getting the other wrong, it might actually help to ground you in your decision about the most valid answer to the original question. Hereââ¬â¢s a pair of questions from a new SAT practice test that illustrates my point.For context, in the passage Akira is a young Japanese man who is meeting a woman named Chie to ask for her daughter Naomi's hand in marriage before he accepts a job in America. Letââ¬â¢s say you arenââ¬â¢t sure about the answer to question 9. You think there are a couple of different possibilities, and none of the answers seems totally out of the question.You can check the evidence listed in question 10 for hints that might give away the answer to question 9.One of those lines must provide direct evidence for the answer. The lines for each choice in question 10 read: A. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t want to trouble you.â⬠B. ââ¬Å"Normally I would approach you more properly, but Iââ¬â¢ve received word of a position. Iââ¬â¢ve an opportunity to go to America, as a dentist for Seattleââ¬â¢s Japanese community.â⬠C. ââ¬Å"Depending on your response, I may stay in Japan.â⬠D. ââ¬Å"I see Iââ¬â¢ve startled you.â⬠Now, let's look back at question 9 and evaluate the choices. Thereââ¬â¢s nothing about the speakerââ¬â¢s parents in the evidence, so we can cross off A.Thereââ¬â¢s also nothing about Akira's fears of Naomiââ¬â¢s rejection, so B is a no-go as well.There is clearly some evidence for C in choice B on question 10, so we can keep that one.There doesnââ¬â¢t seem to be clear evidence for D either; although the statement is true, itââ¬â¢s not the reason the speaker feels this is a matter of urgency, and itââ¬â¢s not explicitly mentioned in the quotes for Question 10. We can conclude that the answers to these questions are C and B respectively. If you use "find the evidence" questions wisely, you can go from taking a blind guess on two questions to feeling relatively confident in your answers to both. Crap, this question reminded me that I really should go to the dentist. Or even get to the point where I have an adult dentist (a dentist that treats adults, that is. My dentist isn't a child, I just happen to like putting Play-Doh in my teeth and pretending it's real fillings). Writing #3: Choose the Shortest Answer In the Writing section, the right answer is usually the one that's the most clear and straightforward.If you canââ¬â¢t decide between a couple of different choices and they both seem like they could be correct, pick the one that has the least number of words in it.Hereââ¬â¢s an example: Typically, the ice sheet begins to show evidence of thawing in late summer. This follows several weeks of higher temperatures. In this case, A is the correct answer because it allows for a combination of the two sentences without including any superfluous or repetitive words.This doesnââ¬â¢t work for every question, but if you have to resort to guessing, itââ¬â¢s a good rule of thumb to follow. #4: Read Back Your Options Again This may seem obvious, but if youââ¬â¢ve narrowed down your choices to a couple of options, it doesnââ¬â¢t hurt to read them back to yourself again in the context of the passage.Even if you donââ¬â¢t know the grammar rules, reading things back in your head may clue you into answers that feel ââ¬Å"off.â⬠If you read a sentence like this under non-test conditions, would it sound right? Or would you think it was weird? Thereââ¬â¢s a tendency to twist perception to feed doubts you have about eliminating odd-sounding choices because of the pressure involved on the SAT.If you make an effort to be more objective and think of the question apart from the stressful context of the test, incorrect choices may become obvious. Don't get it twisted. Math #5: Plug It In If you think youââ¬â¢ll have to resort to guessing on a math problem that involves solving an equation, and you arenââ¬â¢t too short on time, you can try plugging in all the possible answers.You have a good chance of answering correctly if you do this, even if you had no idea how to solve the problem originally.This is a case where putting in just a little extra effort into your guess can reap some serious rewards. #6: Use the Visuals The math section includes many diagrams that illustrate the scenario described in the problem.If youââ¬â¢re not sure how to solve a math problem, and it has an accompanying visual element, you should make a logical guess based on the visual.Hereââ¬â¢s an example (from a sample practice test for the new SAT) of what I mean: By looking at the diagram, you can tell that thereââ¬â¢s only one answer that makes sense even if you don't know how to solve the question. Angle 2 is clearly larger than a right angle, so it must have an angle measurement greater than 90 degrees. This means that the first three answers are all too small to be a good fit based on what we can see in the diagram.The answer has to be D, 145 degrees! Extra-Special Bonus Section: Guessing on Non-Multiple Choice Questions There's also no penalty for incorrect answers on grid-in Math questions.You either get one point for a correct answer or no points for a blank or incorrect answer. Guess if you think you might have a shot at the right answer. Even if you don't feel confident, you have nothing to lose. I want to emphasize what makes these questions different from multiple choice on the guessing front. The grid-ins are the only questions where you shouldn't guess if you have absolutely no idea what the answer is. Itââ¬â¢s a waste of time to fill in those bubbles at random because the chances of getting the correct answer that way are astronomically low. It's like rolling dice, but with way more sides than the number that regular dice have. Conclusion You should answer every multiple choice question on the SAT because thereââ¬â¢s no guessing penalty! SAT / ACT Comparison - PrepScholar 2016 Students' Encyclopedia SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Colleges that require the SAT or ACT as part of their application procedures accept either test equally. Both the SAT and ACT are meant to measure academic ability and college readiness, but they differ in format, content, and overall structure. Note: this article is a series in the PrepScholar2016 Students' Encyclopedia, a free students' and parents' SAT / ACT guide that provides encyclopedic knowledge. Read all the articles here! Historically, students who lived on the East and West coasts tended to take the SAT and students in the Midwest took the ACT. Now the number of students who take these tests is approximately equal, with the number of ACT test-takers surpassing that of SAT test-takers for the first time in 20. Since colleges consider both tests to have equal validity, students benefit from choosing the one on which they can gain the stronger score. To determine which test better suits their abilities and test-taking styles, students can familiarize themselves with the differences between the SAT and ACT. Additionally, students can take official practice tests and use them to predict their probable score range. Differences in Format The SAT has three main sections, Critical Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. These sections are divided into 10 subsections, which are interspersed in various order between test administrations. Each subsection is 10, 20, or 25 minutes long. There aretwo 25 minute sections and one 20 minute section in SAT Critical Reading. There aretwo 25 minute sections and one 20 minute section in SAT Math. There isone 25 minute section for the essay and one 25 minute and one 10 minute section ofmultiple choice in SAT Writing. There is one 25 minute SAT experimental section. This section is unscored and could be Critical Reading, Mathematics, or Writing. The SAT consists of a total of 3 hours and 45 minutes, plus additional time for instructions and three 5 minute breaks. While the SAT is divided into tensubsections, the ACT tests its four subjects in four long sections. Once a section is complete, students will not return to it during the test. The ACT has four main sections: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. Students may also choose to take an optional 30 minute essay. While the order of SAT sections is unpredictable, ACT sections are always presented in this order, with the optional essay given at the end of the test. The sections are timed as follows: ACT English is 45 minutes. ACT Mathematics is 60 minutes. ACT Reading is 35 minutes. ACT Science is 35 minutes. The optional essay is 30 minutes. Unlike the SAT, there is no experimental section on the ACT. It comprises2 hours and 55 minutes, or 3 hours and 25 minutes with the essay. While the multiple choice questions on the SAT have five options and a 0.25 point deduction for wrong answers, ACT questions have four answer choices and no penalty for incorrect responses. For students deciding between the SAT and ACT, the above mentioned differences in format may be important factors in their choice. Students who prefer to focus on one subject at a time may benefit fromthe structure of the ACT, while those who feel energized switching between topics may prefer the experience of taking the SAT. Since anxiety is common around these admissionstests, students mayalso consider which exam structure helps relieve their stress. Some may prefer to divide the test into shorter sections that are finished in less time, as on the SAT. Others may benefit from the predictable nature of the ACT and dislike the variables, such as order of passages and the experimental section, that are part of the SAT. Both the SAT and ACTare similar in that they are strictly timed. Students may not return to a section afterthe allotted time has come to an end. The following information suggests a general amount of time per question. However, the actual time given to each question likely varies by each question's difficulty level, with easy questions taking less time and difficult questions requiring more. SAT Critical Reading: 54 seconds per question SAT Math: 67 seconds per question SAT Writing: 43 seconds per question ACT English: 36 seconds per question ACT Math: 60 seconds per question ACT Reading: 53 seconds per question ACT Science: 53 seconds per question Students typically report havingmore difficulty with timing on the ACT. Students who struggle to answer questions at a fast pace may perform better on the SAT. Since the ACT features four long sections, students have reported that they have a difficult timerecovering if they encounter time management problemswithin a particular section.Timing and pacing are additional considerations for students when determining the suitability of the SAT and ACT for their college planning. Differences in Content and Skills Both the SAT and ACT purport to measure the skills of problem solving and literacy needed for college level courses, but they do so in different ways. The SAT has three main sections, the Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing, while the ACT has four: Reading, Mathematics, English, and Science. The SAT Critical Reading is comparable to the ACT Reading, SAT Math is similar to ACT Math, and SAT Writing is analogous to ACT English. The ACT Science section is unique and has no counterpart onthe SAT. While the aforementioned sections test similar skills, they have key differences in content and question types. By familiarizing themselves with these differences, students can further determine the fitof each test withtheir testing style and academic goals. SAT Critical Reading and ACT Reading Comparison Both the SAT Critical Reading and ACT Reading sections test students' reading comprehension and understanding of vocabulary. Both sections feature passage-based questions that ask students to analyze prose, make inferences, interpret details, glean the meaning of vocabulary in context, and determine author tone and perspective. Preparation for these sections includes review of literary terms, like theme, symbol, and simile, and practice with skimming text for key information and details. The main difference between the SAT and ACT in their reading sections is the SAT's emphasis on high level vocabulary words. The SAT features 19 sentence completion questions, which often require students to understand the meaning of difficult vocabulary. The ACT, on the other hand, asks questions that focus on vocabulary in context. These types of questions, which also appear on the SAT's passage-based questions, ask about relativelycommon words that may have multiple meanings in various contexts. Students with a strong vocabulary or who enjoy studying high level words may prefer the SAT, while students who respond to straightforward wording may perform better on the ACT. The SAT Critical Reading is divided into two 25 minute sections and one 20 minute section, with the possibility of an additional 25 minute experimental section. Each section begins with 6 to 8 sentence completions, followed by passage-based questions. The ACT Reading is one 35 minute section that features four passages, or five with a paired passage exercise. The passages always come from prose fiction or literary narrative, the social sciences, the natural sciences, and humanities, in that order, and are followedby 10 questions. As with the overall structure of the ACT, its Reading section is consistent and predictable, a feature that mayreduce test-taking anxiety for somestudents. SAT Mathematics and ACT Mathematics Comparison Both the SAT Math and ACT Math test concepts in pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, probability, and statistics. The ACT additionally tests trigonometry, as well as, occasionally, matrices, complex numbers, and conic sections.Both SAT Math and ACT Mathask students to solve single and multi-step problems, often by combining concepts from multiple fields of study, and to interpret data from charts and graphs. In addition to testing more advanced math concepts, the ACTrequires students to memorize any needed formulas or facts. The SAT, on the other hand, presents students with formulas to measure area, volume, and circumference, as well as several facts related to geometry at the beginning of each math section. Both SAT and ACT Math sections allow the use of calculators. The SAT Math asks 44 multiple choice questions and 10 student-produced questions, while the ACT Math asks 60 multiple choice questions. The SAT is divided into two 25 minute sections and one 20 minute section. ACT Math is presented in one 60 minute section. Students who consider math to be their strength and have progressed into high school trigonometry may prefer the ACT, because it both tests more advanced concepts and requires stamina over one longer section. For students who feel uneasy about 60 multiple choice questions in a row, the SAT may be a better choice. SAT Writing and ACT English Comparison Both the SAT Writing and ACT English test students' understanding of the rules of English grammar and the organization of ideas within paragraphs. SAT Writing includes a mandatory 25 minute essay, which accounts for about 30% of students' Writing score. On the ACT, the essay is optional and does not get factored into the English section or composite score. SAT Writing asks 49 multiple choice in one 25 minute section and one 10 minute. ACT English asks 75 multiple choice questions in one 45 minute section. Its questions always refer to five passages, while the SAT asks about a combination of individual sentences and paragraphs. Both sections require an understanding of grammar, usage, diction, punctuation, parallel structure, and number agreement. Students must be able to identify errors within sentences and to choose appropriate revisions to correct them. Both sections also ask students to rearrange sentences within paragraphs to improve the flow and sequencing of ideas. The ACT, in particular, focuses on these skills of organization and grammar within the context of longer passages. It does not ask about individual sentences, like the SAT does, but instead focuses its questions around paragraphs and passages. The SAT, on the other hand, asks "identifying sentence errors" and "improving sentences" questions that are entirely focused on individual sentences. Only its "improving paragraphs" questions resemble the ACT's passage-based grammar questions. Given these differences, students can determine where their strengths lie, whether they be in identifying grammar rules based on a single sentence or in rearranging the structure of and ideas within longer passages. ACT Science Only the ACT features a Science section, though the SAT Critical Reading may have a passage derived from the field of natural sciences. The ACT Science section is 35 minutes long and features seven passages. Three of these passages feature data representation, three present research summaries, and one discusses conflicting viewpoints. The scientific concepts tested on the ACT Science are generally basic and may refer to biology, earth science, chemistry, or physics, along with some elementary math. ACT Science questions often ask students to interpret data, compare scientific opinions, and understand and evaluate experimental designs. While the questions are related to scientific opinions and experiments, they are said to test skills of reading comprehension more so than specific content knowledge of science. While students who excel in science may prefer the ACT over the SAT because of this section, they would benefit from understanding that manytest experts liken ACT Science to a reading test rather than to a traditional science test. SAT Essay and Optional ACT Essay Comparison Besides the presence of a Science section on the ACT, the essay is another major difference between the SAT and ACT. The 25 minute SAT essay is mandatory and always comes at the beginning of the exam. The 30 minute ACT essay is optional and, if selected, is administered as the last section. While the SAT essay is part of a student's Writing and composite score, the ACT essay score is not factored in. Prompts for the SAT essay are often abstract, philosophical, and/or related to a social issue. They generally begin with a quote or excerpt from a work of prose, followed by a question to elicit the test-taker's opinion. Test-takersare asked to present their point of view and support it with examples from their reading, studies, experience, or observations. Most SAT expertsadvise students to use a 5 paragraph structure, provide three distinct examples, and choose a strong position, rather than a neutral one, in order to gain a high score. SAT essays are graded by two readers and receive a score between 2 and 12. Sample SAT Essay Prompt The ACT essay also asks test-takers to develop and support their point of view, but the prompts are generally considered to be less abstract than SAT prompts and more grounded in students' experience. ACT prompts are frequentlyrelated to students' experience in school and may elicit test-takers' thoughts on education and learning. Sample ACT Essay Prompt Students who consider writing to be their strength may appreciate that the SAT essay is a part of their overall score. At the same time, theymust consider what date they plan to takethe SAT, as the redesigned SAT, set to begin in March of 2016, will feature a significantly different essay section. Deciding Between the SAT and ACT By researching the differences in content, structure, and question types between the SAT and ACT, students can gain insight into which test better aligns withtheir skills and test-taking style. Since colleges giveboth tests equal consideration, students benefit from choosing the one on which they can achieve a higher score. Students can retake either test several times to improve their scores. Colleges differ in their policies towards test scores and score reports. Some may require that students send all of their results fromeverytesting date, while others allow students to select which score reports are sent. A number of selective colleges require SAT Subject Tests along with the general SATor solely the ACT, a policy which may constituteanother important practical consideration for students when deciding between the two. By researching the differences between the two tests and the standardized testing policies of their colleges of interest, along with taking official SAT and ACT practice tests, students can determine which admissions test better suits their academic strengths and overall approach to the college application process. Redesign Alert The SAT has undergone major revisions and will debut a redesigned version in March of 2016.The new SAT will resemble the ACT in several ways. For one, the SAT essay will be made optional and relocated to the end of the test. Instead of the current 25 minutes, the essay sectionwill be 50 minutes and will ask students to analyze an argument made bya provided passage. Like the ACT, the new SAT will ask about grammar and vocabulary within the context of passages. Sentence completion questions will be eliminated, and vocabulary questions will focus on easy and medium level words within the context of paragraphs and passages. The new SAT will also resemble the ACT by having four answer choices on multiple choice questions instead of five and by using rights-only scoring that does not deduct points for incorrect answers. The ACT is also undergoing some changes, although not as dramatic as the SAT. Its essay section will be lengthened to 40 minutes and will ask students to evaluate various perspectives on an issue and develop their own argument. Like the SAT, the ACT Reading will feature paired passages, which students will be asked to compare and contrast. On the ACT Science, some students will encounter six passages, while others will find the usual seven. Most ACT experts that the test has been getting more challenging and fast-paced in recent years. Wide Area Networks, Observer Management and Monitoring Tools Abstract In this report the concepts of different network management principles will be explored with a view to demonstrating how Observer manages wide area networks. The report will explore the issues with WAN and how Observer overcomes these problems. Introduction Wide area networks are becoming far more complex and far wider spread than ever before, this of course leads to some big problems for the network managers of these large scale networks. Most of these networks are huge in size and can easily encompass an entire city, whereas most of them are transcontinental. This poses the first of many problems for a network manager, they may not be in the same continent as a large proportion of their network. This makes the use of network management software essential, such as Observer. Using network management software means the network manager would not have to leave their desk to find any fault in the network whether it was in the next room or half way across the globe. Literary Review The most useful literary text the author found was from the new owners of Observer, the software used in this report. The new owners ViaviSolutions have published a white paper on usingÃâà Observer Analyser, their latest version of the observer suite as a security tool. (anon, 2014) The journal by Liu et al. (2014) provided a lot of insight into where wide area networks are going, and their optimisation. It contains interesting formulae for network optimisation using the Gauss-Newton method of nonlinear least squares. This principally agrees with the first text in this review about the nature and make up of a wide area network. Ahmed Boutaba, (2014) goes on to agree in part with the rest of the journals about the nature of a WAN but goes on to discuss the fact that traditional controllers can cause bottle necks in the network and that opting for SDN (Software Defined Network) allows for a faster network and a higher level of quality overall. Ahmedi Mitrevski, (2014) looks at possibly the only real area of disagreement with regards to WANs and that is how much they cost. The relative cost of implementing and the monthly upkeep of a network seems to be the only area where professionals disagree about these networks. Anon (2008). This seminar outlined the principles of network management that are considered as industry standard. Cahn, (1998). This journal looks at the design of WANs and their benefits, and this also agrees with the principles outlined in the previous articles mentioned, including the ambiguous nature of the costing of a network. It outlines there are only three important numbers when considering a WAN, these are the cost, either monthly up keep, total set up cost or a mixture of both, the reliability and the response times, and goes on to say these are all directly proportional to each other, as in if you reduce the amount of money spent the response time goes up which brings the reliability down. Dian Septama et al., (2015). In this journal there is lots of information regarding providing a high quality of service, one of the main areas a network manager faces the biggest struggles and can cause the biggest issues aside from security. Feng et al.,( 2014) this journal explores the real world application of a WAN and covers the issues in using traditional methods against new technologies which are opting for more automation and utilising programs and algorithms to manage the trivial day-to-day running of a network which frees up the human element to focus their time on more important tasks. Geer,( 2013)this journal focuses more on the security and current state of the internet, but in essence the internet is just a very large WAN and so its management and security are relevant here (Langer et al., 2010) this journal uses the example of a healthcare organisation utilising the fast and secure delivery methods of a WAN to transport confidential patient files and details across the WAN to remote geographical locations, the main example used is radiology images. These are now digital images and are large in size due to the resolutions required to accurately use them for medical diagnosis. Malhotra et al., (2011) this journal replicates closely the experiment that was carried out by the author of this report, the main differences are this journal experiments with a LAN and uses OPNET to generate the usage. Shin et al., (2007) this journal agrees with Ahmed Boutaba, (2014) and Feng et al.,( 2014) in so much as they state that a network should be monitored and managed by an algorithm based on the existing SNMP framework. Tiropanis et al., (2015)this journal explores the development of networks and their respective sciences and how these have evolved, specifically into internet science and web science. And how each of these areas are evolving in their own areas and how each of them has an impact on the others. Travostino et al., (2006) this journal outlines another real world application of WANs for the distribution of virtual machines and how they can be utilised to compute large tasks aver the network instead of only using local resources. Wang et al., (2014) this journal documents an experiment into the future of how security of a WAN could be implemented. It outlays an idea of sending the authentication key across the network securely but not via mathematical encoding to deter eavesdroppers but by quantum physics. The system uses high frequency lasers beamed down fibre optic cables which are encoded by the transmitter and then decoded by a receiver, the encryption is encoded into the specific frequency of the lasers architecture and photon length. Each transmitter and receiver contain sophisticated monitoring circuitry which monitor the incoming traffic and actively scan for Trojan horse photons from the channel. Observer and wide area networks For the purposes of this report the author created a simulated WAN to utilise the software Observer to implement network management. The network simulated three terminals situated in three cities around the world. The console was simulated as being in London, one was in Paris and the other was in New York Fig 1: Showing Simulated Geographical Location of Console (Circled) Fig 2: Showing Simulated Geographical Location of Second PC (Circled) Fig 3: Showing Simulated Geographical Location of Third PC (Circled) Once the author had set up the WAN they opened Observer on each of the machines connected to the virtual WAN. The machine simulated as London was selected as the machine to be the console for the purpose of managing the network and so was configured to collate the data generated by the network. The other two machines utilised the inbuilt traffic generation tool in Observer. Although the software produces traffic this is of a CBR style and so the data received is evidently simulated but for the purpose of this report this is acceptable. The traffic generator in Observer comes with a plethora of options. The default option sends a small group of packets through on a broadcast channel (ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff) the author altered this setting to generate the top talkers and pair matrix graphs as on a broadcast channel all the traffic appeared to be generating and received by the switchs MAC address which wasnt the case. The size of the packet and the transmission length were also altered to gi ve a larger test sample. The author also tried to generate random traffic which is one of the options but this seemed to have no effect on the traffic generated as it was constant bit rate style simulation traffic. This window is utilised to identify the staations on the network with the highest traffic volumes. This is particularly usefull from a management perspective as to monitor the personality of the network in order to maintain smooth operation, and identify potential security threats. (Anon, 2016) the top talkers screen provides a huge amount of information about the different stations attached to the network, including the amount of traffic generated and received by the node in both packets and bytes, its MAC address, its IP address . From this screen the network manager can monitor all the nodes on the network and diagnose issues as they happen. If a node suddenly starts generating large amounts of traffic for no apparent reason the network manager can have observer set up an alert and even have it send a SMS message or email reporting the issue. This ensures the networ k manager can stay on top of all aspects of the network regardless of time or location. If any issues arise the network manager can deploy a resource from the technical team to resolve the problem swiftly so as not to impact upon the quality of service. Fig 8: Observer Top Talkers window with Paris PC selected Fig 9: Observer Top Talkers window with New York PC selected Looking at the top talkers window identifies that the two Traffic generating PCs were indeed the ones with the heaviest traffic flow, followed by the swiches and hub that connected them all together. A network manager looking at this screen can monitor all machines connected to the network regardless of geographical location, even wireless connections are shown and can be monitored. (Liu et al., 2014) Another window on the console pc is the paired matrix screen. With this tool the network manage can monitor the pathways the network traffic is taking on the network. Through this analysis the network manager can optimise the network through routing manipulation. If a particular router is getting the brunt of the network traffic a second router can be installed to share the traffic burden and reduce the utilisation of the initial router and theoretically improve the quality of service. The first attempts at packet capture by the author demonstrated the need for checking the settings thouroughly as the buffer for capture was very small and so the captured line on the graph was tiny to start with untill this was increased by the author. After increasing the buffer size the graphs look much better and the data far more usable. After increaseing the buffer hugely the traffic was restarted and the capture began again. The packet capture showed the traffic being generated as it monitors all traffic on the network, but will only capture a certain amount for analysis. (Anon, 2016) Results After running the experiment the data collected showed exactly how powerful the observer tool can be, although there was only three machines the scope of observers abilities is evident and can easily be imagined for a network of three thousand machines. The interface can be de-cluttered to show only relevant information so the network manager wouldnt get bogged down with an information overload. Looking at the paired matrix graphs there are several lines on the screen all of which are communiquà ©s between nodes on the network, not all of these are PCs most of them are routers and switches along which the WAN is established. The thickness of each line denotes the amount of traffic it has dealt with. These lines show both incoming and outgoing traffic and the lines connect the source to its destination address. The labels are a combination of the assigned name, normally the name assigned in the NIC and its MAC address EG. Broadcom[5A:7C:09] the label for the console PC. As shown in fig 11 the packets do not have to be routed to or even through the console PC for Observer to pick the packets up and display them. The data collected from the packet capture can be used to manually calculate the utilisation of the network, although this can also be worked out by Observer automatically. The packet capture screen is in a graph format with time across the bottom and the amount of packets per second up the side. There are three coloured lines on the graph blue which denotes the total packets on the network, yellow which are the packets captured by Observer and red which denotes the amount of dropped packets. In the data captured there were no dropped packets, and a peak of approximately 500 packets per second. This flow rate lasts for five minutes with no dropped packets, showing the networks utilisation was within acceptable ranges. if there had been dropped packets it would show that the network was working too hard and there for would mean it had a high utilisation and would prompt the network manager to address the utilisation, and to optimise the efficiency of the network. Looking at the top talkers table in fig 9, in this data it is evident which nodes on the network receive the most and also which transmit the most. This information is highly important to the network manager as these are essential to the security and effective maintenance of the network. For example if there was an employee using the companys network to watch movies on their workstation the network manager would see within Observer a radical change to the stoichiometry of the network and its personality would change. Once this change had been brought to the network managers attention they could look on Observer at the top talkers and paired matrix charts and identify which terminal was using an abnormal amount of the networks bandwidth and then take action against the offending party in line with the companys IT policy. Conclusion This report has looked at the management techniques used in applying wide area networks, their future, their application in the real world and their design and deployment, it is the opinion of the author that the general consensus is that the IT community seem to be in agreement about most concepts of wide area networks, apart from the cost of them, and how to control them. Although the majority of newer reports (Shin et al., 2007), (Ahmed Boutaba, 2014), and (Feng et al., 2014) are swayed towards having the majority of the control handed over to algorithms and evolution programs, there is also still call for there to be a human element to be involved in the management process.Ãâà Ãâà After looking through the papers used in the research for this report it is the opinion of the author that the application of a well managed WAN is far more beneficial than any other communication option, considering the internet is in reality just a huge WAN its self, a WAN can run everythi ng in a business or academic environment, from physical security like door locks and fire alarms through to phones (Dian Septama et al., 2015) and lighting, there are even applications to control environmental conditions. With the introduction of automated network managers, the buildings air conditioning could be being controlled by a computer thousands of miles away. With the development of encrypted laser communications utilised in QKD making networks virtually completely secure the control of more sensitive systems may fall under the control of larger WANs and possibly a large central, global WAN to control all the mundane systems around the globe. To conclude this report the author believes in view of the huge advances in using automated network management options and the amount of non communications based areas controlled by nodes on the network, coupled with the advancements made in artificial intelligence the role of the human network manager could become extinct as we know it. It is passed from adults to their childre n (offspring). DNA is found inside the nucleus of the cell and due to there being a lot of DNA molecules inside a cell; each molecule must be tightly packed.This then becomes a chromosome. DNA found in the cell nucleus is referred to as nuclear DNA, a humanââ¬â¢s complete set of nuclear DNA is called its genome. A genome consists of 23 pairs of chromosomes; these chromosomes together consist of 3. 1 billion bases of DNA sequence. DNA consists of chains called nucleotides. Theses are made up of three parts: a phosphate group, a sugar group and one of four types of nitrogen bases. The four types of nitrogen bases found in nucleotides are: adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G) and cytosine (C). The order or sequence these bases come in, is due to that specific strand of DNA .Each ladder in the DNA is made of two-linked bases. Only (A) and (T) can link together and (G) and (C) can link together. Adenine and Guanine are purines. Purines are double ringed structures. Cytosine and Thymi ne are singled ringed structures and are known as pyramidines. Each DNA sequence that contains instructions, to make a protein, is known as a gene. DNA is used to make proteins in a two-step process. Enzymes read the information in a DNA molecule and then transcribe it into an intermediary molecule called messenger ribonucleic acid (RNA), or mRNA.Next the information in the molecules is translated into the ââ¬Å"languageâ⬠of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. (Appendix i) 1. 2 An Organelle An organelle is a discrete structure within a cell, as chloroplast or acentriole. It is characterised by having specialised functions, a usually distinctive chemical composition and an identifying molecule structure: often found in large numbers in aparticular cell. Organelles have specific roles to play in how cells work. Some organelles are separated from the rest of the cell by lipid bi-layers similar in structure to the cell membrane.An example of an organelle is ri bosomes. The function of ribosomes is the assembly of proteins, in a process called translation. Ribosomes do this by catalysing the assembly of individual amino acids into polypeptide chains; this involves binding a messenger RNA and then using this as a template to join together the correct sequence of amino acids. (Appendix ii) 1. 3 The Cell Membrane All cells are surrounded by a cell membrane, and its primary purpose is to keep the contents of the cell all together. Cell membranes are like many other organelles of a cell because they exist for a specific job.This job is to monitor and control everything that enters and leaves the cell. The cell membrane is made up of lipid molecules called phospholipids. These molecules all have one polar head and two hydrocarbon tails according to cellupedia. There are three main classes of lipid molecules, which make up a cell membrane. These classes include phospholipids, glycolipids and cholesterol. The particular amount of these lipids vari es across different membranes. The cell membrane is mobile and moves along ââ¬Å"grovesâ⬠which are set paths the membrane follow.Membranes are composed phospholipids, proteins and carbohydrates arranged in a fluid mosaic structure. The phospholipids form a thin, flexible sheet, while the proteins float in the phospholipids sheet and the carbohydrates extend out from the proteins. (Appendix iii) 2. 1 The Cell A cell is the smallest unit of living matter. All living things including plants and animals are made up of cells. Cells are made of atoms, which are the smallest units of matter. There are many different kinds of cells. All cells have a ââ¬Å"skinâ⬠called plasma membrane, protecting it from the outside environment.The cell membrane regulates the movement of water, nutrients and wastes into and out of the cell. Inside of the cell membrane are the working parts of the cell. At the centre of the cell is the cell nucleus. The cell nucleus contains the cellââ¬â¢s DN A, the genetic code that coordinates protein synthesis. In addition to the nucleus, there are many organelles inside of the cell, small structures that help carry out the day to day operations of the cell. Organelles are groups of complex molecules that help a cell survive. There are many functions that the cell has to carry out: molecule transport, reproduction, energy conversion and many more.I have chosen to discuss reproduction as one of the cells functions. Reproduction One of the main purposes of human beings and living creatures is to survive. To be able to do this the cells must be able to reproduce. Reproduction allows a species of cells to increase its population and have a higher competitive advantage. Second, sexual reproduction can help introduce genetic variation into specie which can be beneficial in the long run. Example of this might be the difference in looks between individuals. Cells can reproduce in two ways, mitosis and meiosis.In mitosis, the resulting daughte r cell is an identical clone of the original cell. Mitosis is mostly used by somatic cells (cells of the body). Meiosis however, is the form of sexual reproduction and only occurs in gametes (reproductive cells). Mitosis If an organism is to live and grow up it must reproduce. Cell division serves an important role in organismsââ¬â¢ health and growth. Cell division begins with interphase, when the cell replicates all of its genomic and cytoplasmic material and prepares for division. After the cell enters the 4-phased mitosis.To see the similarities between mitosis and meiosis see appendix. (Appendix IV) 2. 2 Body Tissue Body tissue is a layer of cells that perform a function. Different types of tissues have different structures that are specific to that function. Tissues can be held together by a sticky coating called an ââ¬Å"extracellular matrixâ⬠. The Latin word for tissue is derived from the verb texere, ââ¬Å"to weaveâ⬠. The major tissue types in the human body: â⬠¢ Connective â⬠¢ Muscular â⬠¢ Nervous System â⬠¢ Lymphatic The type of tissue that has been selected is muscle tissue. Muscle TissueMuscle tissue contains a number of microfilaments composed of actinsââ¬â¢ and myosin, which are contractile proteins. There are three types of tissue: Cardiac muscle, skeletal muscle and visceral (smooth) muscle. Cardiac muscle is found in the heart. The cells are joined to one another by intercalated discs which allow the synchronisation of the heartbeat. Skeletal muscle is attached to the bones by tendons. Skeletal muscle is striated muscle. Unlike cardiac muscle, the cells are not branched. Visceral muscle is found in: the arteries, the bladder, the digestive tract and in many other organs.Visceral muscle contracts slower than skeletal muscle, but the contraction can be sustained over a long period of time. (Appendix v) 2. 3 Body System There are 11 systems in the body they are as follows: The Circulatory system Digestive system Endocrine system Immune system Lymphatic system Muscular system Nervous system Reproductive system Skeletal system. (Appendix VI) The system that has been selected is ââ¬ËThe Reproductive Systemââ¬â¢. Reproductive System Females have sex organs of: ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus and vagina. Whereas the males sex organs are: vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate and the penis.In the reproductive system a female needs a male to fertilise her egg. There are two types of sex cells known as gametes, the male gamete is sperm and the femalesââ¬â¢ gamete is the egg. The femalesââ¬â¢ vagina has several functions: used for sexual intercourse, the pathway that the baby comes out at childbirth, as the route for the menstrual blood (period) to leave the body from the uterus and for a tampon to be used during the menstrual cycle. The menstrual cycle lasts for around 28 days, during this cycle a egg is released from the femalesââ¬â¢ ovaries once every month and goes down the fa llopian tubes to be fertilised.If the egg does not get fertilised it dries up and two weeks later leaves the body through the vagina, which causes the female to have her period. A period is forms of blood and tissue from the inner lining of the uterus. A period can last anything up to 5 days or longer. Females will not have a period until they have started puberty; puberty usually starts when females and males are aged around 11-14. If the male and female sex cell are fertilised the egg that is released will not dry up and the female will not have a period. The egg will then make its way to the uterus and grow into a foetus. Appendix vii) 3. 1 1st diagnostic procedure- Ultrasound Ultrasound is a non-invasive technique that may be used during pregnancy for finding out the sex of the foetus and whether there is more than one foetus, ultrasound also identifies the measurements of the foetus. The sonographer, is the person who carries out the procedure, she or he can usually tell you ho w many weeks old your foetus is. The mother usually has an ultrasound twice in nine months, the first at 3 months and the second at 5 months. Usually at the second scan you will be able to find out if the baby is a boy or a girl.Ultrasound can find any complications or problems that the baby might have during the pregnancy. They put a cold gel on the mothersââ¬â¢ bump and press the transducer across the bump to see inside of the belly. Having experienced this procedure confirms that ultrasound is a very accurate method of confirming all of the above. (Appendix viii) 3. 2 2nd diagnostic procedure- Gastroscopy Gastroscopy is used if a person is suffering problems, such as severe heartburn or indigestion. An individual may then be required to have a Gastroscopy. It is a diagnostic procedure that allows doctors to look at the upper part of the digestive system.The doctor uses a tiny camera on the end of a flexible tube which is called an endoscope. It is then fed down your throat and down through the tube that carries your food to your stomach which is called oesophagus. It is then into your stomach. Once in place the camera shows the image onto a screen for the doctor to diagnose any problems. It usually takes between 5-20 minutes to perform the procedure. It is usually performed at an outpatient department, which means you can go home the same day. You should not eat anything for six hours before the procedure as the stomach needs to be empty. (Appendix ix) . 3 Similarities, benefits and risks of the two diagnostic procedures The two diagnostic procedures are only similar in a few ways. When both procedures are performed you get to leave the hospital the same day. Both procedures take no less than 5 minutes and no longer than 20 minutes. There should be no pain in either of the procedures performed. However, Ultrasound does not have any risks whereas Gastroscopy has a few risks. Some of the benefits of having an Ultrasound are: â⬠¢ There are no needles or injections and the procedure is painless â⬠¢ Ultrasound imaging uses no ionizing radiation Causes no health problems â⬠¢ Gives a clear picture of soft tissues, that do not show up in an x-ray â⬠¢ There are no risks Some of the risks for having a Gastroscopy are: â⬠¢ The individual may have a sore throat for a day or two afterwards, this is caused if the endoscope scrapes your throat â⬠¢ Small risk that the endoscope could tear your stomach which is known as perforation â⬠¢ Risk of chest infection or pneumonia is slightly higher than normal â⬠¢ When the endoscope is removed your likely to gag or rench (Appendix x) 4. 1 Cloning This is the topic which has been selected to discuss.There are 4 types of cloning: Recombinant DNA technology or DNA cloning, reproductive cloning and therapeutic cloning. People are most familiar with reproductive cloning when it comes to talk about cloning. Reproductive Cloning Reproductive Cloning is a technology used to generate an animal that has the same DNA as an existing animal or a previous existing animal. Scientists transfer genetic material from the nucleus of a donor adult cell to an egg whose nucleus has been removed. The DNA from the reconstructed egg must be treated with chemicals or electric current in order to stimulate cell division.This process is known as ââ¬Å"somatic cell nuclear transferâ⬠. Once the cloned embryo reaches a suitable stage, it is then placed into the animalsââ¬â¢ uterus where it continues to grow until birth. Scientists have bee cloning animals for many years since 1952; hundreds of cloned animals such as sheep and cows exist today. Scientists are hoping to be able to use cloning by generating tissues and organs to use for transplants. To do this the patient waiting for a transplant, would have DNA extracted from their body. This would then be inserted into an enucleated egg.After the DNA starts to divide, embryonic stem cells that can be transformed into a tissu e would then be harvested. The stem cells would then be used to generate an organ or tissue, which is a genetic match to the patient Reproductive cloning is contentious as it seeks to create a duplicate of an existing animal. Until the birth of Dolly the sheep in 1996, there was doubt that this would work in mammals, but now some scientists are trying to clone a human. Many ethical arguments against human cloning are caused by misconceptions.Many people seem to think that clones will have the same sort of characteristics and personalities as the person from which they were cloned. Also some people seem to believe that clone will be both physically and behaviourally the same as the donor. Many people also believe that cloning would lead to the loss of individuality however; cloned people have their own personality that is dissimilar from whom they were cloned according to the House Judiciary Committee.
